I'd go for the Canon Powershot A570IS as an option too. Good decent shutter speed and image quality. Whilst not an SLR - it means the price is definitely good value too.

Hi Adam. The shortest answer is that DSLR is the way to go to have any real control over capture time, because it has to be faster or as fast as the fastest shutter speed that the camera can deliver, so faster than 1/4000th of a second on a Canon 30D for example. In fact the speed of the CCD in DSLR cameras is one of the reasons why they are more expensive. In truth though, a lot of budget cameras are at long last getting away from the obvious delay between hitting the button and the image being captured that so plagued early digital cameras. As a basic rule I would say spend more than £300 and it will never be a problem. Spend between £150 and £300 and some things will occasionally be too fast for the camera. Once you get below the £150 mark you get what you paid for, and what you are paying for was not designed to be used for photographing action. Have a look at the Lumix range, the Ixus range and at the top end of the compact market the Canon Powershot G9. If you have more money to spend, then the Canon 400D and the Nikon D80 are both great starting points in the DSLR market. Hoep that helps :-)
