Choosing between three SLR cameras - help me choose please.
I've been researching my first Digital SLR and narrowed it down to three. The Nikon D40, Canon Eos 350d, or the Canon Eos 400d - any suggestions?

Choosing between these three comes down to some rather personal preferences, assuming money isn't a factor. The obvious place to start is Canon vs Nikon: some people feel the Nikon is nicer to hold however with any decent-sized lens one balances on the lens barrel and thus doesn't hold the grip tightly. Worth considering is the fact that in SLR-Land, your body will rapidly becomes the cheapest part of your collection, so consider Canon vs Nikon lenses rather than bodies. I believe Nikon lenses are generally a little cheaper than Canon however with over 50% market share, own a Canon and you have a huge choice of 2nd hand lenses. Also consider which brands any of your friends owns, as you can merrily borrow from them where necessary. These factors swung it to Canon for me. As for 350D vs 400D, the differences aren't huge. Some can't live without the separate "settings" LCD present on the 350 but ditched on the 400 in favour of a larger Review LCD. Again, for me personally, as I was a First Timer I didn't care about this, and preferred the 400D's just-a-little-better-in-every-way spec.

I have to be honest there really is no contest if you are at the price point that you appear to be at by highlighting these three cameras - buy the Canon 400D. Feature for feature it's a better camera than the Nikon D40 or even D40x, and can be found cheaper if you shop around. Hope that helps.

i do have the D40 and i must say it's brilliant. it may have less features as the 400D but its form factor makes it a winner. it is so small and light for a DSLR that you take it everywhere you go. and it may have less MPs than the 400D but the 6MP sensor is one of the sharpest. the D40x is not worth an investment. its features are almost identical with the D40 plus the 10MP sensor gets worse marks in almost every review that i have read. it doesn't justify he higher price at all. rather redirect some cash towards the excellent 55-200 lens with VR and you might never need another lens.
