Going from 300D to 40D, good idea? How is it for astronomy photography?
I've been in the market for a new camera body since my 300D's processor fried itself. How does the 40D stack up for the price? Also, I really want to get into astrophotography as well (though I know nothing about astronomy -- so that's also new to me). Is the 40D any good for that? Or should I maybe be scouring eBay for a use 20Da?

I think I will soon do the switch from the 300D to 40D. I was wondering if the upcoming 450D (to be announced during the PMA in Jan08) would have a better feature list than the 40D (like the 400D had better resolution than 30D for instance); but rumors said it will be very close to 40D (resolution / live view / DIGIC III...). So I think it's time for me to go the semi-pro 40D. Reviews in the French press are very positive - and some mentioned that 40D is a good camera for astronomy.

Well that's not the smallest step up in the world of cameras Josh :-) The 40d has better signal processing and better sensor technology by far. Basically... Canon 300d: 3072 x 2048 pixel Pixel size: 7.1 x 7.1 uM Chip size: 22.7 x 15 mm Canon 40d: 3888 x 2592 pixel Pizel size: 5.7 microns square Sensor size: 22.2 x 14.8 millimeters

You'll also find that the EOS 40D has "Live View facilities" which make it great for macro or astro-photography which gets you a pin sharp image at the focal plane. Price-wise around £650 I think which is good value.

I finally did the switch from 300D to 40D, and it's really pleasant to have a mid-range camera - not only the tech features are a huge step forward (300D is 4 years old now...), but the weight of the camera makes it easier to handle, the visor is really great, the AF is far more advanced... A real pleasure.
