The crowd hath spoken! A 400D is about 50% more expensive, and that's before you buy lenses. The G9 is also smaller. If you're looking for a quality point & shoot save yourself some money and get the G9 (or others in that class). If you fancy Photography as a hobby and intend to invest more cash then 400D is a great starting point.

Hello Robert. The problem with this question is that there is no real comparison to be drawn. In every way the SLR is the better choice for flexibility, performance and in the end results. Though the Powershot G9 is an excellent camera, the 400D is so much more of a camera that the price differential actually represents excellent value. Not only does the SLR offer the flexibility to change the lens, but it will also make it possible for you to use much higher quality lenses, offering truer colour, greater clarity and the option to allow a lot more light into the camera than the G9 ever could. If price is really the issue, try the Nikon D40x - it's not as feature-rich as the Canon 400D, and you may well out-grow it quickly, but it is still a significant step up from the Powershot G9 in terms of the advantages I outline above. If you have the money, buy a Canon 400D as just a body, and buy the best quality variable focal length lens that you can afford.

Personally- I think not. I'm a great fan of the EOS 400D which I bought last month. I think it's more of a camera you as well as an SLR and that Cnet review said it was a good complement too. Can you afford both?
