Oven buyers’ guide

oven

If you're in the market for a new oven you've come to the right place. At Crowdstorm we have all the best deals and offers from the UK's leading retailers - from John Lewis through to Argos and Currys.

We have all the big manufacturers covered too, from Miele to AEG ovens. But when it comes to selecting the right product there are many different oven types to compare, which is where this handy guide comes in.

You can decide to spend next to nothing on one of the cheap ovens that are on offer, or push the boat out and opt for a state of the art high-end oven with all of the bells and whistles - either way, we'll walk you right through the process below.

But let's make sure you're in the right place first! This page is dedicated purely to ovens: if you're looking for either hobs or complete cookers, please follow the links to find pages dedicated to those instead. You'll also want to switch pages if you're looking for microwave ovens.

Gas ovens versus electric ovens

Before we go any further, the fundamental question is gas or electric. While some of us don't have a choice between the two, if you do there are several things to consider:

  • Price: Electric ovens, on the whole, are cheaper to produce and therefore tend to be less expensive (and cheaper to install). Running a gas line into your kitchen, if you don't already have one, can also be an expensive extra cost. At the same time, gas cooking is cheaper in terms of bills than using an electric oven.
  • Usage: Gas needs to be ignited, which can lead to problems down the line in terms of breakdowns - electrics simply heat up once you turn them on. Electrics also tend to offer more in the way of extra functions, but many people prefer the simplicity of altering the flame size of a gas oven - and they also respond faster when you change temperature.
  • Cooking: Another mixed bag - with gas ovens cooking faster, but the dry and even heat of an electric often being preferred for roasting and baking.
  • Cleaning: Electric surfaces and burners are easier to clean.

Types of oven

With your first choice made, it's time to consider some of the other key oven options. These sometimes aren't immediately clear from the picture, so make sure you're buying the right type!

  • Built-in ovens: These ovens need to be built into an existing oven housing but tend to be built in higher up, usually at eye level, without hobs above. Some models described as 'built-in' may also work as a built-under (see below).
  • Built under ovens: These are also built into an existing space, but are designed to go under a kitchen worktop alongside your kitchen units.
  • Freestanding ovens: This is the most common term for standard ovens in their own housing that are not built into a fitted kitchen.
  • Double ovens: As it sounds, this is essentially two ovens stacked on top of each other. These are great if you either cook large meals or need to set very different temperatures - for example, if you're slow cooking a piece of meat. The best double ovens also double as a grill, giving you extra cooking options.

Oven features

Here we'll talk a little about some key features that set the better ovens apart from the cheap-end models, as you'll need to decide if you think they're worth paying that little extra for.

When it comes to energy rating, most ovens tend to be rated an A - but do keep your eyes peeled, as some cheaper models will have a B rating. This might not sound like much, but can really be a big deal in terms of energy use. A B-rated oven could use as much as 40 per cent more energy than an A+ model, meaning any saving you initially could be short-lived!

It's also worth looking out for self-cleaning ovens. These have special liners that absorb and then burn away grease, making that horrible oven cleaning job much less of a nightmare.

Timers - and especially delayed start timers - can be a real bonus in the kitchen. The better ovens now let you delay the start of cooking, or switch the oven off once the cooking time is up, which can save not only hassle but your whole meal!

Sealing the deal on your new oven

oven

Once you've made your decision, simply click through to the retailer of your choice. Remember you'll be making the purchase directly from their official website which will open up when you click the button next to your chosen oven - we just help send you to where you want to go.

If you're still worried about your decision, or want to have a look inside the oven you intend to buy to get a better feel of what you're paying for, it never hurts to go to a showroom and have a chat with an expert - then head home (or onto your smartphone) to order it via Crowdstorm, where we have all the best online deals and special offers in one place!
