Gonna take you down to Chinatown. There was a time when videogames used to be nothing more than big, dumb fun. Do you remember? Back before stealth sections slowed everyone down, overly dramatic storylines wound everyone up and "dynamic volumetric real-time bump mapping!" PR cheerleading didn't exist? Back then, it was just you, some guns and an army to take down by yourself in a videogame that kicked arse and took names but didn't bother writing the names down because it was too busy kicking arse and uttering cool one-liners.
