What is the best lens (in the range of the 17-85mm) for the Canon EOS 40D?
Hi, I read the Canon EFS 17-85 that is bundled with the 40D is not that good. What would be your advice for a lens in ~ the same range with a price lower than 1000 euros ? Nicolas

1000 euros gives you a LOT of choice, so I wouldn't limit yourself to 17-85 unless you're sure that's the range you want. If it is, your choices by Canon aren't huge - EF-S 17-85 F4-5.6 IS, its faster cousin the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS, or I found an EF 17-40 f4 L. It depends on what you want to shoot really. In my experience, there are ALWAYS people who reckon XYZ lens "is not that good". If I were you I would learn WHY certain lenses are considered better than others and form your own opinion. Use www.slrgear.com to guide you - very good for lens technicals

What Geoff says here is absolutely right - find out why it is that people describe lenses as "not that good" and decide if these reasons matter to you. The "kit" lens on the D40 (the EF-S 17-85) is quite slow, cannot be used on a Canon 5D or 1Ds III, and is of a lower grade of glass than other USM or L-Series lenses that cost considerably more money. My best advice to anyone considering buying a Canon DSLR body-only, is to buy one of the Canon 50mm lenses in your price bracket (the most expensive on that you can afford), and worry about variable focal length lenses once you worked out what you need them for and how often you will need them.
